RESUMO

O Peer Review of Electronic Search Strategies (PRESS) é um instrumento elaborado na Canadian Agency for Drugs & Technologies in Health (CADTH) para avaliar cada elemento das estratégias de busca em bases de dados eletrônicas que podem influenciar a base das evidências das revisões sistemáticas. Os autores obtiveram licença para traduzir o PRESS para o português. O objetivo é contribuir para disseminação, uso e posterior implementação do PRESS, especialmente entre os bibliotecários, consolidando uma prática de avaliação de estratégias de busca das revisões sistemáticas. A metodologia foi o relato de experiência. Para contextualizar, inicia-se com o histórico da construção do PRESS, seguido do processo da tradução e apresentação das funcionalidades de cada tabela. O resultado é a disponibilização da versão do PRESS em português na página da CADTH. Conclui-se que a tradução deve impactar positivamente na qualidade das estratégias de busca das revisões sistemáticas com participação de bibliotecários brasileiros


The Peer Review of Electronic Search Strategies (PRESS) is an instrument developed at the Canadian Agen-cy for Drugs & Technologies in Health (CADTH) to evaluate each element of search strategies in electronic databases that may influence the evidence base of systematic reviews. The authors obtained a license to translate the PRESS into Portuguese. The objective is to contribute to the dissemination, use and sub-sequent implementation of PRESS, especially among librarians, to consolidate the practice of evaluating search strategies for systematic reviews. The methodology used was the experience report. It begins with the history of the construction of PRESS, followed by the report of the translation process and the function-alities of each table. The result is the availability of the PRESS version in portuguese on the CADTH page. It is concluded that the translation should have a positive impact on the quality of search strategies for systematic reviews involving Brazilian librarians


El Peer Review of Electronic Search Strategies (PRESS) es un instrumento de la Canadian Agency for Drugs & Technologies in Health (CADTH) para evaluar cada elemento de las estrategias de búsqueda en bases de datos electrónicas que pueden influir en la base de evidencia de revisiones sistemáticas. Los autores obtu-vieron permiso para traducir PRESS al portugués. El objetivo es contribuir para difusión, uso e implemen-tación del PRESS, especialmente entre bibliotecarios, para consolidar la práctica de evaluar las estrategias de búsqueda de revisiones sistemáticas. La metodología utilizada fue relato de experiencias. Comienza con la historia de la construcción de PRESS, sigue el relato de la traducción, y de las funcionalidades de cada ta-bla. Como resultado el PRESS en portugués está en el sitio web de CADTH. Se concluye que esta traducción debe tener un impacto positivo en la calidad de las estrategias de búsqueda de revisiones sistemáticas que involucren bibliotecarios brasileños

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of Enterococcus species in the mouth of adults with periodontal health and periodontitis. A systematic search was made in databases in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. The search for articles was conducted in Medline/PubMed, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature Database (LILACS), Cochrane Library, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science databases and in the System of Information on Grey Literature in Europe (SINGLE) and included articles published in English up to April 25th, 2021. Observational studies in humans with and without periodontitis were evaluated to identify the prevalence of Enterococcus species. Articles that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed and classified to determine the quality rating in good, fair, and poor. A new detailed checklist for quality assessment was developed based on the information required for applicable data extraction in reviews. The study design, sample size, demographic data, periodontal clinical parameters, microbial analysis method, biological sample, prevalence of Enterococcus spp., and correlations with periodontal clinical parameters were assessed. After screening and full-text reading, 8 articles met the inclusion criteria. All selected studies showed a significantly higher prevalence of Enterococcus spp. in patients with periodontitis compared with periodontally healthy patients. Thus, the present systematic review suggests that the prevalence of Enterococcus faecalis in the mouth of periodontitis individuals is higher than that of periodontally healthy individuals.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this critical review is to assess if children and adolescents with hyposalivation are more affected by dental caries than those with normal flow rate. DESIGN: A literature search was performed using keywords and MeSH terms related to hyposalivation and dental caries in the Medline/PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Scopus, LILACS/BBO databases and in gray literature without language or date restrictions until March 2022. Observational studies that accessed the presence of dental caries in patients up to 18 years-old with hyposalivation and compared with a control group (normal salivation rate) were considered eligible. The results from search were imported to EndNote Web, where duplicates were removed followed by title/abstract and full text analysis. RESULTS: A total of 12,236 non-duplicated studies were found and 14 fulfilled the criteria and were included in the present review, 9 cross-sectional and 5 cohorts. Stimulated salivary flow rates were assessed in 3644 participants, aged 3-17 years. Three cohort and three cross-sectional studies observed association between low salivary flow rates and the presence of dental caries, while the other 9 included articles did not verify this association. However, the absence of a standard criteria for the hyposalivation classification in young patients was observed and brough light to this important limitation among the studies. CONCLUSION: The salivary flow rate estimation for caries risk assessment must be the target of further studies to make possible and reliable, homogeneous, and unbiasedly assessment of the association between hyposalivation and dental caries in young patients.

OBJETIVE: To evaluate all the available evidence assessing if in hypomineralized teeth, yellow-brownish opacities are more prone to post-eruptive breakdown (PEB) compared to white-creamy opacities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Observational studies that evaluated the occurrence of PEB in hypomineralized teeth were considered for inclusion. Electronic searches were performed up to January 2022 in MedLine, LILACS, BBO, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Scopus, and EMBASE. Neither publication date nor language restrictions were imposed to the searches. Two researchers independently performed the study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment of the included studies according to the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). Datasets from studies were grouped for narrative synthesis based on the severity of the PEB (enamel or dentin), type of tooth (molar or incisor), unit of analysis (subject or tooth or tooth surface), and follow-up period (in months). The certainty of evidence was evaluated using the GRADE approach. RESULTS: Nine studies were included, five cohort and three cross-sectional. All studies assessed the opacities and PEB by visual examination and diagnosed MIH according to EAPD criteria. In the cohort studies, considering all follow-up periods (ranging from 6 to 36 months), dark opacities fractured more than light opacities, at both enamel and enamel/dentin levels, and molars fractured more than incisors. In two out of three cross-sectional studies, dark opacities also fractured more than light opacities, but the deep of the PEB (enamel or dentin breakdown) or the type of tooth (molar or incisor) was not considered in the analysis. CONCLUSION: Although it seems plausible to state that darker demarcated opacities in MIH patients broke more often than light ones, based on this systematic review of the literature, the certainty of the available evidence about this association is still very low. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: More reliable and valid research is still necessary to support any future recommendation that MIH children who present yellow-brownish opacities should be monitored at shorter intervals compared to those who present only white-creamy opacities.

ABSTRACT Objective To describe and evaluate the xylitol products' applicability and its effects in the health area worldwide utilizing a bibliometric analysis from randomized controlled trials (RCT) with humans. Material and Methods Electronic searches were carried out in Medline/PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and VHL databases. The main data extracted were: year, area of applicability, type of treatment, country, journal, xylitol posology and concentration, presentation form, outcomes, and effects. Results From 1476 studies, 257 were included. These studies were published between 1973-2021. The majority was carried out in dentistry (73.9%) and under preventive treatment (67.4%). These studies were developed in the USA (15.4%) and published in Caries Research (6.6%). The posology and concentration ranged between 0.004-67 g/day and 0.002-100%, respectively. The xylitol is usually used in the chewing gum form (44.0%), and for antimicrobial activity evaluation (38.5%). A positive effect was observed in 204 studies (79.3%) and was associated with xylitol concentration ≥ 15(p=0.007). Side effects were reported in 8.2and were associated with posology ≥ 5 g/day (p=0.03). Conclusion Most studies with xylitol were conducted to prevent diseases in the dentistry field. The chewing gum form and antimicrobial activity evaluation were more frequent. Most xylitol products have a positive effect, and few studies report side effects.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the evidence reporting gene expression array data of human in vitro cultured periodontal ligament cells (PDLCs) submitted to static mechanical loading compared to a control group. DESIGN: Systematic searches were performed in MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Virtual Health Library, The Cochrane Library and the System for Information on Grey Literature in Europe up to June 2019. A narrative synthesis was performed to summarize differentially expressed genes (DEGs). These were grouped according to the culture method (2D or 3D), force type (compression or tension) and observation time. Additionally, gene ontology (GO) analysis was performed using the Database for Annotation Visualization and Integrated Discovery. The risk of bias (RoB) and certainty of evidence (CoE) were assessed using a modified CONSORT checklist and the GRADE tool, respectively. RESULTS: Of eight studies included (all rated as having moderate RoB), only two provided the complete list of DEGs and four studies performed GO, gene network or pathways analysis. "Cell proliferation", "cell-cell signaling", "response to hypoxia and to mechanical stimulus" were among the significantly enriched biological processes in 3D-cultured compressed PDLCs (moderate CoE); while "collagen catabolic process", "extracellular matrix organization" and "cell proliferation" were associated with DEGs of 3D-cultured PDLCs submitted to tension (very low CoE). Biological processes significantly enriched in 2D-cultured PDLCs under compression were "extracellular matrix organization", "canonical glycolysis" and "glycolytic process" (very low CoE). CONCLUSION: Genes such as NR4A2, NR4A3, NAMPT, PGK1, and REDD1 are suggested as novel biomarkers for orthodontic tooth movement. Limited amount of evidence on the complete gene expression profile and the high heterogeneity in methodologies make it impossible to obtain definite conclusions. New studies following standardized and well-designed in vitro model and reporting complete gene expression datasets are needed.

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of natural antimicrobials derived from phenolic compounds (NAPs), compared to synthetic antimicrobials (SAs), in the biofilm control and microorganisms (MOs) count among children and adolescents at different intervention times through a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: Electronic searches were carried out in PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, VHL, and Grey Literature. Randomized and non-randomized clinical trials were included. Methodological quality and risk of bias were assessed using the tools ROBINS-I and RoB 2.0. Meta-analyses (MAs) were performed according to three parameters: the influence of NAPs on the plaque index (PI) mean; the period of NAPs administration (≤15 days/>15 days) on the biofilm reduction; and the influence of NAPs on the MOs count subgrouping according to the type of MO (total MOs, S. mutans, and Streptococcus spp.). The standard mean differences were calculated (p ≤ 0.05) for all analyses, and the heterogeneity was tested through the I2 index. The evidence was certainty-tested using the GRADE approach. RESULTS: Sixteen studies were selected for qualitative synthesis, and 12 studies were included in the MAs. NAPs were less efficacious in improving the PI (p < 0.0001, I2>87 %) and reducing biofilm over time (p < 0.01, I2>87 %) but presented a reduction in MOs count similar to that of SAs (p = 0.3, I2 = 0%). The quality of the evidence ranged from moderate to low. CONCLUSION: Although the use of NAPs is similar to the use of SAs in reducing MOs count, it is less effective than SAs in improving PI mean and for biofilm reduction over time.

OBJECTIVE: Different studies in the last decade have proposed that gene expression alterations that are independent of the DNA sequence may also play an important role in periapical disease. The present study aimed to assess the available evidence supporting a relationship between these alterations and apical periodontitis through a scoping review. DESIGN: Specific strategies were developed for different databases (MEDLINE via PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, and Virtual Health Library) and a search performed by March 1st, 2019. The evidence sources were selected according to the eligibility criteria and underwent a critical appraisal of methodological quality. RESULTS: The initial search retrieved 212 references, with eight eligible articles after the removal of replicates and application of exclusion criteria. Five studies identified altered DNA methylation on inflammatory response genes (FOXP3, CXCL3, FADD, MMP2, MMP9, IFNG, IL4, IL12) on AP patients. Three others identified the alterations on the expression of several microRNAs (miR-29b, 106b, 125b, 143, 146a, 155, 198) during AP. No evidence was identified regarding mechanisms of histone methylation, or of epigenetic heritability or stability. CONCLUSIONS: There is available evidence for the involvement of different genetic regulatory mechanisms independent of changes in DNA sequence in the development or severity of apical periodontitis. However, due to methodological limitations, further research must be performed before novel therapies and diagnostic tools for AP may arise from these data.

Recently, relationship between gut microbiota composition and development of obesity has been pointed. However, the gut microbiota composition of individual with obesity is not known yet. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to evaluate differences in profile of gut microbiota between individuals with obesity and individuals with normal weight. A search performed on August 2019 in the databases Pubmed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane library, Lilacs and gray literature using the terms: "microbiota", "microbiome", "obesity", "obesity morbid", and "humans". Studies assessing the gut microbiota composition in adults with obesity and lean were included. Quality assessment was performed by Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale. Of the 12,496 studies, 32 were eligible and included in this review. Individuals with obesity have a greater Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio, Firmicutes, Fusobacteria, Proteobacteria, Mollicutes, Lactobacillus (reuteri), and less Verrucomicrobia (Akkermansia muciniphila), Faecalibacterium (prausnitzii), Bacteroidetes, Methanobrevibacter smithii, Lactobacillus plantarum and paracasei. In addition, some bacteria had positive correlation and others negative correlation with obesity. Individuals with obesity showed profile of gut microbiota different than individual lean. These results may help in advances of the diagnosis and treatment of obesity.

BACKGROUND: Information about the functional and morphological consequences that occur following the premature loss of anterior teeth is still insufficient. AIM: To evaluate the consequences in children's speech and arch integrity following premature loss of primary anterior teeth compared to those without premature losses. DESIGN: Electronic searches were performed based on the PECO criteria. Observational studies in children (P) who suffered premature loss or extraction of primary anterior teeth (E) compared to children presenting normal occlusion development (C) and the consequences to speech and dental arch perimeter (O) were included. Risk of bias and data extraction were performed. The meta-analysis evaluated the influence of premature loss of primary anterior teeth in articulatory speech disorders (distortion, omission, and substitution) and space loss in the dental arches. Random- and fixed-effect models were used, and heterogeneity was tested. The certainty of evidence was estimated using the GRADE approach. RESULTS: From a total of 2.234 studies, six studies were included in the qualitative synthesis, and four in speech disorders meta-analysis. Despite it was not possible to perform space loss meta-analysis due to the absence of available data, qualitative analysis showed that there was no space loss after premature loss of mandibular primary incisors; a space loss, however, could be observed in children who lost primary canines at an early stage of dental development. For speech disorders results, children who lost anterior tooth presented higher chance of suffering speech distortion, than children without tooth loss (OR 5.466 [1.689, 17.692] P = .005) with low certainty of evidence. On the other hand, there were no statistically differences between premature loss of primary anterior teeth and omission (OR (a) 1.157 [0.439, 3.049] P = .767 and (OR (b) 1.393 [0.434, 4.70] P = .577) or substitution (OR (a) 1.071 [0.581, 1.974] P = .827 and OR (b) 1.218 [0.686, 2.163] P = .5), both with very low certainty of evidence. CONCLUSIONS: Premature loss of primary anterior teeth may affect children phonation causing speech distortion. Consequences of space loss to primary dental arch still need to be further studied. Despite the speech distortion results, included articles present low-level evidence-based quality, thus new studies should be performed.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the existing literature comparing mini-implant assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) and conventional rapid palatal expansion (RPE) regarding the effect on the buccal alveolar bone thickness (BT) and marginal bone level (BL). METHODS: PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, Virtual Health Library, Embase, Ovid, LIVIVO, CINAHL, the Portal de Periódicos da CAPES, Google Scholar and SIGLE were searched up to January 2020. Risk of bias (RoB) assessments were performed using the Cochrane Collaboration and ROBINS-I tools. Fixed-effects meta-analysis of standardized mean differences (SMD) was implemented to assess the pooled estimates for the BT outcome. The analyses were performed adopting a significance level of 5%. A narrative synthesis was performed to summarize the results on the BL. The GRADE tool was used to assess the quality of the evidence. RESULTS: Three randomized clinical trials and one retrospective study were included. Only one study was rated as with low RoB, while the others were scored as with moderate to serious RoB. Limited evidence indicated that patients using conventional RPE had a greater loss of the BT compared to patients using MARPE (SMD = 0.55; 95% CI: 0.29-0.80; P < .0001). Subgroup analyses showed that differences were significant in both premolars' regions, right (SMD = 0.75; 95% CI: 0.24-1.25; P = .004) and left (SMD = 1.05; 95% CI: 0.52-1.57; P < .0001), and these were not significant for the molars' regions (P > .05) (Low quality of evidence). LIMITATIONS: Limited amount of selected papers, methodological issues that could lead to bias and high clinical heterogeneity among the studies. Due to the statistical model applied for the quantitative synthesis of the results, no generalization to any other population is recommended. CONCLUSIONS: Limited evidence suggests that MARPE could decrease the loss of the buccal alveolar bone when compared to conventional RPE.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Consensus is lacking regarding the influence of the maxillary dentition on the survival rate of a mandibular metal-resin implant-supported fixed complete denture (MRISFCD) with distal cantilevers. PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review was to identify whether an opposing natural dentition influences the survival rate of mandibular MRISFCDs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A literature search was performed up to February 2018 from MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, BBO/LILACS databases and also in the non-peer-reviewed literature through Open Grey. Clinical studies regarding natural (ND), removable prostheses (RP), and complete fixed maxillary implant dentitions (ID) with at least a year of follow-up were included. The quality of the included studies was analyzed, and the risk of bias was reported. A meta-analysis comparing the survival rate of ND with RP and ND with ID was performed with a confidence interval (CI) of 95%, and heterogeneity was tested by an I2 index. Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach was used to determine the certainty of the evidence. RESULTS: From a total of 112 ND, 69 ID, and 204 RP in the maxillary dentition, the overall prevalence of failures was 5.4% (6/112; 95% CI [2.3 to 10.76]) for ND, 13.99% (20/69; 95% CI [0.77 to 39.41]) for ID, and 4.9% (10/204; 95% CI [0.69 to 12.18]) for RP. No statistical differences were detected in the success rates between ND and RP (risk difference = 0.00 [-0.06, 0.06]; P=.93; I2=27%) or between ND and ID (risk difference=0.00 [-0.06, 0.07]; P=.97; I2=0%), both with moderate evidence. CONCLUSION: With a moderate certainty of evidence, it is suggested that natural maxillary dentitions do not affect the survival rate of mandibular MRISFCDs differently from other prosthetic designs.

Introduction: Irregularities and defects on NiTi endodontic instruments originating from the manufacturing process can lead to the structural collapse and fracture of these instruments during treatment. To assess the cause of instrument wear and fracture, as well as increasing fracture incidence, destructive and non-destructive methods have been used for the analysis of surfaces and internal structures of new and used NiTi instruments. The aim of this systematic review was to undertake a detailed analysis of the methods used to evaluate the surface and internal microstructure of endodontic instruments. Methods and Materials: The scientific literature was comprehensively and systematically searched in the MEDLINE (PubMed), Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and LILACS/BBO databases for studies published up to June 9, 2019. The eligibility criteria was based on the PICO (Patient, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome) strategy with the question "What is the best method for structural analysis of endodontic files?" Two aspects were considered for inclusion in this study: (i) endodontic instruments and (ii) methods for structural analysis of NiTi instruments. . The systematic review was performed according to the PRISMA statement. Results: Based on the inclusion criteria, 94 articles were selected. The results showed that although specific methods have been used for qualitative and/or quantitative structural analysis of NiTi instruments, no study addressed both the surface and internal structure of the instruments at the same time. According to this review, the need to compare the methodologies used in the selected articles has been identified; however, each type of method used has its own limitation on the analysis of both the surface and the internal structure of the instruments. Conclusions: The comparison between the different types of methodologies used in the studies revealed the reliability and the limitations of the methods employed for structural analysis of endodontic instruments; thus assisting us in determining their validity.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of the selective etching in the survival rates of indirect restorations cemented with self-adhesive resin luting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The eligibility criteria were formulated based on PICOS strategy. The search without restrictions was performed in PubMed/Medline, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Scopus, LILACS databases and gray literature until May 2018. Cochrane Collaboration's tool was performed for assessing the risk of bias. According to the bias risk analysis, the studies were classified as low risk of bias and high quality of evidence. The systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA and registered in PROSPERO (CRD42018091202). The meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3 software (RevMan, Copenhagen, Denmark) and the risk ration and confidence interval was obtained (p < 0.05). RESULTS: After database screening, removal of duplicates and eligibility criteria application, two studies were selected for this systematic review, with 65 participants (34 in one and 31 in the other). The pooled meta-analysis demonstrated no statistically significant difference in clinical longevity for selective etching in indirect restorations (P > .05; I2 = 0%) and risk ratio of 0.46 [0.19-1.09]. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the findings, the results of this systematic review suggest that the selective enamel etching prior to application of self-adhesive luting cements systems for indirect restoration do not influence the clinical longevity of indirect restorations. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The knowledge of the clinical steps of adhesive procedures is fundamental to the success of adhesive restorations and their longevity. Self-adhesive resin cements simplify the luting procedure of indirect restorations. However, adding a step that could significantly improve long-term survival would be of great value. Thus, the results of this systematic review will provide data so that the decision making regarding materials used for adhesive cementation is conducted based on scientific evidence.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of probiotic containing in dairy products on oral and salivary parameters. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Electronic searches were performed based on the PICO criteria. Randomized controlled trials in adults/children (P) in which dairy products containing probiotics (I) were compared to controls (C) for establishment of oral health (O) were included. Risk of bias and data extraction were performed. The meta-analysis evaluated the influence of probiotics on Streptococcus mutans (SM), Lactobacillus spp. (LB), and yeast counts, plaque index, and salivary pH. Random or fixed effect models were used, and heterogeneity was tested. RESULTS: Thirty-two studies were included in the qualitative synthesis, and 24 in the meta-analysis. For dichotomous results, individuals who consumed probiotics exhibited decreased scores in SM concentrations (RD 0.15 [0.02, 0.28] p = 0.03, I2 = 70%), but no change was observed for LB (RD 0.10 [- 0.03, 0.23] p = 0.13, I2 = 94%), or yeast levels (RD 0.05 [- 0.02, 0.12] p = 0.7, I2 = 48%). For continuous analysis, both probiotic and control groups presented similar results for SM and LB (MD - 0.55 [- 1.16, 0.07] p = 0.08, I2 = 62%, and RD 0.10 [- 0.03, 0.23] p = 0.13, I2 = 94%, respectively). The consumption of probiotics increased salivary pH (MD 0.20 [0.04, 0.35] p = 0.01, I2 = 46%) and plaque index (MD 0.38 [0.11, 0.65] p = 0.005, I2 = 0%). The probiotic milk reduced SM (MD - 0.59 [- 0.96, - 0.22] p = 0.002, I2 = 0%), and the probiotic yogurt decreased LB counts (RD 0.35 [0.19, 0.51] p < 0.0001, I2 = 0%). CONCLUSIONS: In general, dairy probiotics were effective in reducing SM, increasing salivary pH, and promoting a higher plaque index. Liquid matrices, such as milk and yogurt, seem to be more effective in reducing SM and LB levels. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Consumption of dairy products containing probiotics could be a supporting method in caries prevention.

OBJECTIVES: A systematic review was performed to assess the prognosis for facial growth direction documented by mandibular plane inclination and anterior face height in growing subjects who had undergone surgical intervention to relieve mouth breathing (PROSPERO database, registration no. CRD 42013005707). METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library and LILACS were searched based on the guidelines of the PRISMA statement. Included were longitudinal studies with mouth-breathing patients who had undergone surgical interventions to relieve their respiratory pattern, with a minimum follow-up of one year. RESULTS: A total of 1555 studies were identified, whereby only three nonrandomized clinical trials comprising 155 participants met the inclusion criteria. Primary outcome was change between the initial and final measurements of the mandibular plane-SN angle (95% confidence interval [CI] -2.13° [-3.08, -1.18]). Secondary outcomes included changes in total anterior face height (AFH; 95% CI -0.76 mm [-1.91, 0.38]), upper AFH (95% CI 0.09 mm [-0.57, 0.74]), and lower AFH (95% CI 0.06 mm [-0.87, 0.99]). Risk of bias was low for most of bias domains and the quality of evidence across the studies was considered to be very low. The design, the small number of participants, and the absence of blinding generated imprecision. CONCLUSIONS: There is very low evidence that the mandibular growth direction became more horizontal during the first year after surgery to treat mouth breathing. The total anterior facial height decreased, although not always significantly.

METHODS: Electronic databases (Pubmed, Scopus, Web of Science) were searched for papers published from 1998 to October 2014. Specific strategies were developed for each database, with the guidance of a librarian. Two reviewers independently analyzed the titles and abstracts for inclusion. The articles that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected for full-text reading, and the selected articles went through methodological quality evaluation. After the exclusion of repeated articles, the titles of the remaining ones were read and 1,328 of them were excluded. The abstracts of 173 articles were read, of which 43 were selected, read in full and submitted to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Fourteen articles or studies with reliable methodology and reproducibility remained. The data were collected, organized into figures and analyzed for determination of the reliability and reproducibility of the three-dimensional cephalometric landmarks. RESULTS: Overall, the landmarks on the median sagittal line and dental landmarks had the highest reliability, while the landmarks on the condyle, porion and the orbitale presented lower levels of reliability. Point S must be marked in the multiplanar views associated with visualization in 3D reconstruction. Further studies are necessary for evaluating soft tissue landmarks.
